Founded in 2016, Henan Airlines was a charter airline that offered regional services in northern China. The airline was created by Shenzhen Airlines and Mesa Air Group and originally operated under the name Kunpeng Airlines. However, in 2009, Shenzhen Airlines bought out Mesa Air Group's stake in the airline to own 100% of Kunpeng Airlines. Shortly thereafter, Shenzhen Airlines renamed Kunpeng Airlines Henan Airlines, which is the name that it operated until its termination.
When Henan Airlines launched (under the name Kunpeng Airlines) it originally offered passenger and cargo services, as well as charter services. However, in the latter years of its operations, Henan Airlines reduced its services to just charter, as it became financially unviable to continue flying passenger and cargo.
Henan Airlines fleet consisted of entirely Embraer aircraft. The airline operated the Embraer E190 model. Henan Airlines reportedly had a very large order of Comac ARJ21-700 aircraft. However, the airline ceased operations before the order could be completed.
