Sabah Air plans to operate scheduled passenger services in 2024

Kota Kinabalu-based general aviation operator Sabah Air, also known as Sabah Airlines, is planning to venture into scheduled passenger operations by next year. The airline, chaired by Kenny Chua, plans to start with a fleet of three leased aircraft. The lease agreement, which is open to various aircraft manufacturers beyond Boeing and Airbus, is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.

Sabah Air aims to operate as a low-cost carrier, similar to airlines like AirAsia and Firefly, particularly on the Kota Kinabalu - Kuala Lumpur International route. This expansion plan has been made possible by increased revenues, bolstered by closed charter contracts in the oil and resources sector, and a growing influx of foreign investments into Sabah.

Sabah Air was originally established in 1975 by the Sabah state government to provide air transport services, including medical transfers and oil rig support flights. The airline's diversified fleet includes helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, contributing to its readiness for commercial operations.
