Mexico's population is on a 0.8% annual increase. People are moving to Mexico thanks to its vibrant culture, good quality of life, and decent cost of living.
Is Mexico safe?
Mostly. Overall, Mexico has a crime index of 53.05, which indicates a moderate level of crime.
Sometimes Mexico gets a bad rep, but in reality, the most common type of crime is petty theft. If you're worried about drug cartels, don't be. Organised crime doesn't usually impact tourists, but those actually involved in gang life.
Still, you should always keep your wits about you. Avoid dark, isolated areas, especially as a solo female traveller. Don't wear flashy jewellery or carry large sums of money. And, if you do get into a confrontation, try to de-escalate the situation.
Is Mexico expensive?
This depends on where you go.
Parts of Mexico, like Cancun and Mexico City, are tourist hotspots and can be pretty expensive. Whereas, you'll also find plenty of less-popular destinations that are more moderately priced.
If you want to save as much as possible, then visit during Mexico's rainy season (May to October). This is Mexico's quietest time of year, offering cheaper flights and accommodation. However, be warned that there is a hurricane risk during this period.
