Getting to Chichen Itza from Cancún

There are two main ways to get to Chichen Itza from Cancún — by car or by bus.

By car

The drive from Cancún to Chichen Itza roughly takes between 120–150 minutes. You will have to factor in the cost of renting a car and paying for fuel, as well as parking costs and toll roads. Parking at Chichen Itza costs $30 MXP, fuel costs approximately $200 MXP each way and tolls cost $300 MXP each way.

By bus

There is one direct bus that travels from Cancún to Chichen Itza each day, provided by ADO (Mexican bus company). The bus departs each morning at 8.45am from Cancún Bus Station (downtown Cancún) and takes around three hours and 15 minutes. The bus can cost between $207–335 MXP, depending on how far in advance you buy your ticket. You can purchase your ticket online at the ADO website for the best rates.

Mérida International Airport

Mérida International Airport is the closest airport to Chichen Itza by both distance and time. It's the best airport to fly into if you're flying from within Mexico or flying from certain destinations in America, such as Miami or Houston or even Canada.

Getting to Chichen Itza from Mérida

By car

The drive from Mérida to Chichen Itza takes roughly 90 minutes. You do have to factor in all the costs of car rental, fuel, parking and tolls but as it's closer, it'll be slightly less expensive than from Cancún.

By bus

There are three buses that travel to Chichen Itza from Mérida each morning. The bus journey takes around one hour and 45 minutes and costs roughly $150 MXP.

Cozumel International Airport

Cozumel International Airport is the second closest airport to Chichen Itza by distance. However, because it's on a separate island from Mexico, it takes the longest time to travel from, as it requires you to get a ferry. Still, Cozumel is a breathtaking island. And if you wanted to visit the island and make a day or overnight trip to Chichen Itza, it's entirely possible. Cozumel has connections to several destinations in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Getting to Chichen Itza from Cozumel

By car & ferry

Driving from Cozumel to Chichen Itza takes between three and four hours each way. You'll have to get the ferry across to Playa del Carmen (Calica), which roughly costs $500 MXP, as well as factor in the prices of fuel, car rental, tolls and parking.

You'll also have to consider ferry times, as you'll need to make the last ferry back to Cozumel if you're staying on the island after your visit to Chichen Itza. Ferry times frequently change, so it's important to check the last scheduled ferry with the company that you're travelling with.
