Flying with low-cost carriers

A great way to get a cheaper flight, which can be great for your budget, is by flying low-cost. Airfares are usually unbundled, meaning you can pay for services that you want and aren't forced into paying for something you don't want. Some budget airlines even offer intercontinental flights as well as domestic flights, helping you to travel wherever you want, on a budget flight.

Here are some of the most popular around the globe:

  • FlySafair
  • IndiGo
  • Wizz Air
  • Ryanair
  • Allegiant
  • Jetstar Airways

Deciding when to fly matters

Shoulder Season

You can grab a great budget flight just by flying at certain times of the day, week or year. Airlines are always busiest during summer and winter vacation times, so these flights will always be the most expensive. If you can, then we recommend travelling out of season and during the shoulder season. As there is less demand in these periods, airlines are able to offer reduced fares to try and increase demand, meaning you can easily bag a budget flight.

Red eye flights

Red-eye flights are flights that depart late at night, flying through the night and then arrive the next day early in the morning. As the flights are operated at unusual and sometimes awkward times, they can be cheaper. This means that occasionally, by travelling on one of these flights, you can bag yourself a budget flight. However, please be aware that sometimes, red-eye flights may not always be the cheapest option due to convenience.

Booking in advance

Booking your flight in advance can help you to book a budget flight and spread out your spending by using one of our 'Buy Now, Pay Later' payment options. Read our handy blog post on the cheapest days to buy flights to learn more about getting a budget flight.

Best Fare Finder calendar

Use our Best Fare Calendar

At Alternative Airlines, we want to help you get a budget flight, which is why we created the Best Fare Finder tool.

This feature is great if you are flexible with the days you can travel. When booking and entering your dates in the flight search tool, you will notice colour-coded dates. If the date you plan to travel is coloured in red, it means it will be one of the more expensive days to fly that month. However, if the date is shaded green, then it means this will be the cheapest day to fly. Using this handy tool, you'll be able to get yourself a great budget flight.

How can I find budget-friendly flights without hidden fees?

There are lots of ways to find budget-friendly flights on the Alternative Airlines' website, without hidden fees. Here's how:

  • Adding bags during checkout is almost always cheaper than paying the airline at the airport. However, it's important to check if a "bundle" (Economy vs. Basic) is actually cheaper than adding a bag to a Basic fare.
  • Optimise the payment method you are using. Remember to pay in the correct currency to avoid any extra fees that come with conversion rates.
  • At checkout, select a BNPL provider like Klarna, Affirm or Afterpay and choose the option with 0% interest for a more budget-friendly option.

When is the best time to book flights to get the lowest price?

Depending on whether you're flying domestically or internationally, the best time to book flights varies. To get the lowest price for a domestic flight, it is recommended that you book your flights 4 weeks before you are due to travel. If you are planning to fly internationally, it's recommended that you book your flights 1 to 3 months in advance to secure the lowest prices.
