The capital city, Phnom Penh, has many attractions that cater to all travellers, including the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Discover Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh has been the capital city of Cambodia since 1434, when it was first founded. French colonial buildings are one of the city's top attractions, highlighting the French influence on Cambodian architecture in the early 20th century. The Royal Palace, built in the 19th century, is also a top attraction as it is still the official residence of the Cambodian king.

If you want a different perspective of the city, take a cruise on the Mekong and Tonle Sap lakes. Phnom Penh has one of the most energetic night markets in Southeast Asia - you can take a stroll through the market and try out some Cambodian street food or shop around for souvenirs.

The capital is served by Phnom Penh International Airport, the largest airport in Cambodia. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Phnom Penh from Europe, North America, Australia or South Africa, however, you can still book connecting flights and transfer from other major cities in Southeast Asia or East Asia.

Cambodia Travel Tips

When planning your trip to Cambodia, it's essential that you do your research on some useful do's and don'ts prior to arriving so that you can remain respectful and aware from the get-go! Let's get you clued up:

  • If you plan to pay a visit to Buddhist sites, when entering temple buildings, make sure to cover your knees and elbows, and remove your shoes and any head coverings. When sitting, tuck your feet behind you to avoid pointing them towards Buddha images as it's a sign of respect.
  • It isn't recommended for you to be walking or riding alone late at night as you may be at risk, or in danger if you do so. If you are solo travelling keep this in mind, and potentially avoid going out on your own after dark.
  • Tuk-tuks are a popular and affordable way to get around cities like Cambodia, but it's important to be aware of potential scams. Top tip is to try and agree on the price before the journey begins.
  • There are many insect-born diseases present throughout Cambodia so we would recommend that precautions are taken to prevent becoming unwell. To protect yourself from disease you can make sure your accommodation is mosquito-proof, regularly use insect repellent, dress in long, loose clothing and get vaccinated for diseases such as malaria.
