The airline was originally founded in 1959 as Polynesian Airlines but briefly stopped flying in 2005. After being taken over by Polynesian Blue (which then became Virgin Samoa), the airline resumed flights with its current name at the end of 2017.

The airline is completely owned by the government of Samoa and is based in the country's capital, Apia. At present, the airline operates short-haul flights within the country as well as long-haul flights to Australia and New Zealand.

Baggage Policy

If you're flying with Samoa Airways, you will need to follow the different rules around carry-on and checked baggage allowances. These will vary depending on the fare type you have purchased.

Carry-on Baggage

All passengers who have purchased a Fiafa Saver, Fiafa Smart and Fiafa Plus ticket are permitted one piece of carry-on baggage weighing 7kg. The same applies to passengers with Fiafa Flexi or Fiafa Premium tickets.

Checked Baggage

All passengers who have purchased a Fiafa Saver, Fiafa Smart and Fiafa Plus ticket are permitted one piece of checked baggage weighing 23kg. For Fiafa Flexi passengers the checked baggage allowance is one piece of baggage weighing 32kg. Fiafa Premium (Business Class) passengers are permitted two pieces of baggage weighing 32kg.

Airport Check-In

Passengers should aim to arrive at the airport at least two hours before flight departure.

Cabin Classes

For flights from and to Samoa and Australia or New Zealand, check-in opens 3 hours before the departure times. You must check-in for flight at least 90 minutes before departure time.

For flights from and to Samoa and American Samoa, check-in opens 1 hour before to the scheduled departure times. You have to check-in for the flight at least 60 minutes before departure time.

Economy Class

Passengers will have access to the complimentary inflight entertainment with a selection of films and games available. Passengers are also offered complimentary hot snack box and drinks such as juice, tea and coffee. You can enjoy Sapasui with rice or from other selections available. There's also a vegetarian option available too. There is also Wi-Fi available onboard to help you stay connected with work.

Business Class

Business Class offers passengers premium comfort and ease of travel. Passengers are allocated additional checked baggage and cabin baggage. At the airport, passengers can have a more enjoyable airport experience with lounge access and priority boarding. Onboard, passengers receive a notebook and headphones, and also a full food and beverage service. The Business Class cabin is set out in a 2 x 2 formation.

Frequent Flyer

Samoa Airways is currently not a member of a frequent flyer program and points can't be earned or redeemed on flights.

Airline Alliance

Samoa Airways offers turbo flights to Pago Pago airport (PPG) from Fagalii Airport (FGI) and as part of the Pacific Partnership Alliance, it will codeshare with Fiji Airways on flights from and to Nadi and Honolulu.

Wheelchairs

Unaccompanied Minors

A child must be accompanied by a passenger aged 18 years old and above. Unaccompanied Minor form is required for children under the age of 12 who will travel alone. Expectant Mothers

For the safety of the soon to be born baby, it's advised that all heavily pregnant mothers inform their doctor before reserving their flight and inquire about their health to travel the length of the trip they want to take. For 27 weeks of pregnancy, passengers require to sign a Release and Indemnity Form to be allowed carriage. For pregnancies between 28 and 34 weeks, the passenger needs to have a doctor’s letter confirming that they are fit to fly and the date the certificate is issued should not be more than seven days from the scheduled flight departure date. The passenger will also be required to sign a Release and Indemnity Form.

Samoa Airways is based at Faleolo International Airport (APW), which is located 40km from Apia (the capital of Samoa). Until 1984, the airport could not accommodate aircraft larger than a Boeing 737. Nowadays, the airport has been expanded and the majority of the island's international traffic lands at Faleolo Airport (APW).
