Wedged between Mexico and Guatemala is Belize, a Central American nation that is home to the world's second-largest barrier reef and the ancient Mayan city of Caracol.

Discover Belmopan
Belmopan, the current capital of Belize, is a relatively young city. It was established in the 1970s after a hurricane had devastated Belize City, the former capital. Today it's home to the Belizean government with its National Assembly Building resembling a Mayan temple!
Belmopan isn't your typical vacation spot, however, that doesn't mean there's nothing fun to do. The city sits near the Caves Branch River where cave tubing adventures are popular, and the Guanacaste National Park is nearby, with hiking trails available where you can spot a variety of exotic birds.
Belmopan doesn't have its own international airport, so to reach the capital you'll first need to fly into Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City, then travel by bus or car to Belmopan - an 80-kilometre journey.
The best time to visit this administrative city is from January to May when the skies are sunny with very little chance of rain. But if you're planning a more cultural visit, book flights for September to see Independence Day celebrations, or April/May for the Agriculture and Trade Show.
Things to do in Belize
Thinking of visiting Belize but unsure where to start? Here are some great activities to include in your trip!
The Great Blue Hole
This iconic, perfectly circular sinkhole off the coast of Belize is a bucket-list dive for experienced divers, known for its unique geological formations (stalactites and stalagmites) and occasional sightings of sharks. Even if you're not a diver, you can experience it via a scenic flyover tour (by plane or helicopter) for breathtaking aerial views.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave)
This is often considered the most adventurous Mayan cultural experience in Belize. It involves hiking, wading, and swimming into a sacred cave that served as a Mayan ceremonial site, where you can see ancient pottery, artefacts, and even calcified human skeletal remains, including the famous "Crystal Maiden." (Note: This tour is physically demanding and requires a certified guide).
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
This protected area is renowned as the world's first jaguar preserve, but it is home to all 5 of Belize's majestic wildcats (Ocelots, Pumas, Margays, Jaguars and Jaguarundis). It's an incredible place for hiking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, swimming in waterfalls (like Maya King Waterfalls), and exploring the dense rainforest. You can also spot the cheeky black howler monkey and kinkajou swinging from tree to tree.

Belize Travel Tips
- Prioritize Safety in Tourist Areas: While Belize City's Southside has high crime, popular tourist spots like the Cayes and San Ignacio are generally safe. Practice common-sense safety: avoid displaying wealth, use reputable operators for tours/taxis, and limit time in high-risk zones, especially in Belize City.
- Practice Eco-Tourism for Fragile Ecosystems: Protect Belize's delicate reef and rainforests. Use reef-safe sunscreen, stay on trails, and never touch wildlife or coral. Reduce plastic use with a reusable water bottle, conserve resources, and support sustainable tour operators and eco-lodges.
- Respect Local Culture and Customs: Belize is diverse and laid-back. While English is official, Kriol and Spanish are widely spoken; a friendly demeanor is key. Dress modestly, particularly in rural or religious areas, and remember that tipping (10-15%) is customary for good service.
- Strategize Your Transportation: Choose transport based on budget and convenience. Domestic flights are fast but costly; water taxis are cheaper for islands. On the mainland, public "chicken buses" are budget-friendly, while shuttles offer comfort. If driving, be aware of road conditions and ensure insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What language do they speak in Belize?
Belize stands out in Central America as the only country with English as its official language, a legacy of its British colonial past. However, the most commonly spoken language for daily communication and inter-ethnic interaction is Belizean Kriol, an English-based creole. Due to its proximity to Spanish-speaking neighbours and a significant Mestizo population, Spanish is also widely prevalent.
Which season is best to visit Belize?
The best season to visit Belize is generally during its dry season, which runs from December to May. These months are considered the prime time to visit. You'll experience excellent weather for all activities, including diving and snorkelling on the Barrier Reef (with the best underwater visibility), exploring Maya ruins, and enjoying jungle adventures. Please note that this is also the busiest time, particularly around Christmas, New Year's, and Easter, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.
Is Belize expensive?
Belize is generally more expensive than its Central American neighbours like Mexico or Guatemala, but typically more affordable than many Caribbean island destinations. The overall cost of your trip will heavily depend on your preferred travel style. Budget travellers can expect to spend around $50-$80 per day staying in hostels, eating local food, and using public transport, while mid-range travellers might budget $100-$200 for comfortable hotels, a mix of dining, and some guided tours.
Is Belize safe?
Belize presents a nuanced safety picture, often advised by global governments to exercise increased caution due to its high per capita murder rate. However, the vast majority of this violent crime is gang-related and concentrated in specific areas of Belize City, particularly the Southside, which is not a primary tourist destination. Popular tourist areas like Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and San Ignacio are generally much safer, though petty crime such as pickpocketing and theft can occur.
