About

Swiftair is a Spanish airline that flies a mix of charter and scheduled cargo and passenger flights. The airline is based at Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) and — due to its unrestrictive Air Operating Licence (AOC) — can fly to anywhere in the world. Most of its flights are flown within Europe and to parts of North Africa and the Middle East.

Founded in 1986, Swiftair is best known for its cargo services but is also known for leasing its planes to scheduled airlines and operating on their behalf. Most commonly, the airline is used by other Spanish airlines Air Europa, Binter and Canaryfly.

The airline is one of the largest airlines within Spain by fleet size. It had two subsidiaries — Swiftair Bahrain and Mediterranean Air Freight, both of which specialised in transporting cargo. Swiftair Bahrain was based in Manama, Bahrain and ceased operations in 2012. Mediterranean Air Freight is based in Athens, Greece and still flies today.

Swiftair has an Air Operators Licence that allows it to fly anywhere in the world. However, it does have a number of destinations that it flies to on a regular basis. These include Algiers, Larnaca, Marseille, Athens, Casablanca, Lisbon, Dakar, Ibiza, Tenerife and more.

It's important to note that baggage allowance can differ depending on the flight route. However, the following is as a general rule:

Carry-On Baggage

Passengers are given a free carry-on baggage allowance of 9 kg. This baggage must fit within the dimensions of 55 cm (21.6") x 35 cm (13.8") x 25 cm (9.8").

Checked Baggage

Checked baggage allowance will differ depending on the route flown.

On certain flights, passengers will be given a free checked baggage allowance of 20 kg, with no limit on the number of bags.

On other flights, passengers will be given a free checked baggage allowance of 32 kg, with a maximum combined weight of 32 kg.

Note: It's important that passengers follow the checked baggage allowance given for their flight. This can be found out by checking the e-ticket fo the flight or by contacting Alternative Airlines or the airline directly.

Economy Class

Economy Class is Swiftair's most affordable cabin class, perfect for passengers that are looking for a comfortable journey but aren't bothered about additional perks.

Seats

Depending on which plane is used for the flight, seats are set out in either a 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 formation.

Business Class

While Swiftair Business Class is in the same section of the plane as Economy Class, it gives passengers a little extra with an enhanced service that includes additional perks such as a welcome drink, complimentary in-flight food, priority boarding, reading materials and a larger baggage allowance.

Seats

Seats are set out in a 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 formation. Unlike some other Business Class seats, these seats are very similar to the seats that you would find in Economy Class. Swiftair Business Class seats do give a little extra legroom but less when compared to other airlines.

The main perks in Swiftair Business Class come from the extras in service and food and drink, rather than the seats on the plane.

In-Flight Entertainment

There's no in-flight entertainment system installed on Swiftair flights.

Passengers in Business Class are given magazines and newspapers to enjoy throughout the flight.

Passengers in Economy Class are not given any materials for in-flight entertainment.

Food and Drink

Food and drink are available to purchase from the in-flight cabin crew once the plane is airborne.

Passengers are able to pre-order an in-flight meal before the date of departure if they wish. Otherwise, the food and drink offering consists of light snacks and alcoholic, soft, hot and cold beverages.

Passengers in Business Class are given snacks and refreshments, as well as a full in-flight meal. All food and drink are complimentary with a Business Class ticket.

Check-In Information

Online

There's no online check-in directly on the airline's website. However, if the airline is operating a flight on behalf of another airline, online check-in may be available through that airline's website.

Airport

If online check-in is unavailable or passengers would prefer to check-in at the airport, this can be done by visiting the airport of departure with the relevant travel documents.

Frequent Flyer

Swiftair doesn't have a frequent flyer program. However, if a passenger books a flight on another airline that Swiftair is operating on behalf of, that passenger can still earn miles/points if the airline has its own frequent flyer program.

For example, if a passenger books a flight on an Iberia flight operated by Swiftair, that passenger is still eligible to earn Avios points on the flight at the same rate that they would on an ordinary Iberia flight operated by Iberia.

Fleet

Swiftair has one of the largest fleets in Spain. The airline has more than 45 planes within its fleet. This consists of plane models from a variety of different manufactures, including Boeing, ATR and Embraer.

Some of its most used models are the ATR 72 series, Boeing 737 series and the Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia.

Hub Airport

Madrid Barajas Airport

Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) is the main international airport in Spain's capital, Madrid and the hub airport for Swiftair. Swiftair flies the majority of its cargo flights in and out of Madrid airport, as well as operating on behalf of other airlines flying through Madrid. With charter flights, the airline doesn't always use Madrid airport, as the charter request can be between any two destinations in the world. However, most of the airline's fleet is stationed at Madrid airport.

Madrid airport is also the hub for Air Europa, Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum. Other airlines that fly Evelop, Ryanair, Wamos Air, Air Moldova, Boliviana, El Al, Hainan Airlines, LOT Polish, Swiss, Volotea and many more.
