What is the Masai Mara?
The Masai Mara is one of Africa’s most famous parks, as it is one of the best destinations in the world for viewing the big cats and safari animals, including Lion, Cheetah, Zebra, and Giraffe. The park is a reserved savannah wilderness area, with grassy plains and rolling hills - the luscious landscape the result of plenty of rainfall.
The great wildebeest migration which comes through the park between July and August each year, as over 2.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles follow the rains in search of new grass to eat. The migration is one of the world’s most incredible wildlife spectacles, and recognised as one of the natural wonders of the world!
How to travel to the Masai Mara?
The Masai Mara is located 270km/167mi northwest of Nairobi, the vibrant capital of Kenya. The road is notoriously rough and unreliable, and the journey takes about five hours. Therefore, most heading to the park will choose to fly.
Getting to Nairobi is easy, as the city is a major East African transport hub. International flights heading to Nairobi are likely to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), which is 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi.
Once you land, it is easy to catch a domestic flight to Masai Mara. To do so, you’ll need to head from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Wilson Airport (WIL), which is located 6km/4mi south. This is because most domestic flights to/from Nairobi depart from Wilson Airport. The journey between the two airports takes just 30 mins approx and there are a number of transfer easy options.
Domestic flights will head to one of a small number of airstrips within the Maasai Mara park. Most scheduled flights fly to Mara Serena Airport, an airstrip in the Masai Mara Park.
