Flights to the Faroe Islands

How to fly to the Faroe Islands?

There is only one commercial airport on the Faroe Islands: Vágar Airport, on the larger island of Vágar.

Vágar Airport

Vágar Airport (FAE) is the only airport in the Faroe Islands. It is located on the island of Vágar, 1.2 miles east of the village of Sørvágu, which is one of the most populated areas of the Faroe Islands. The airport is the main operating base for Atlantic Airways, the Faroese national airline. As well as essential regional flights amongst the islands, Atlantic Airways operates international flights to Denmark, Norway, Iceland. The airline also operates seasonal flights to France, Spain and the UK.

Besides Atlantic Airways, there are currently only 2 other airlines to operate scheduled passenger flights to/from the airport: Wideroe, which flies to Norway, and Scandinavian Airlines, which flies to Denmark.

Inter-island flights amongst the Faroe Islands

Interisland flights are operated by Atlantic Airways Helicopter, the domestic Helicopter service provided by Atlantic Airways. Helicopter flights visit the capitol, Tórshavn, as well as the second largest town of Klaksvík. Services also run to the southern islands of Skúvoy, Stóra Dímun and Suðuroy (Froðba), to the northern islands of Svínoy and Fugloy (Hattarvík and Kirkja), to the western island of Mykines, and the island Koltur.

How do I get to the Faroe Islands?​

Fly to Vágar Airport (FAE), the only commercial airport serving the islands. A number of airlines operate direct flights to the islands from European cities including Copenhagen (Denmark), Reykjavík (Iceland) and Oslo (Norway).

How long is the flight between Copenhagen and the Faroe Islands?

It takes approximately 2 hours to fly between Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Faroe Islands. Travelling by plane is a much faster and easier option compared to ferry.

What airlines operate flights to the Faroe Islands?

Atlantic Airways is the national carrier of the Faroe Islands, operating non-stop flights between the remote islands and nearby countries in Europe, including Denmark, Norway and the UK. Scandinavian Airlines also operates flights to Copenhagen. The only other airline to fly to the islands is Wideroe, which connects Sørvágu with Bergen, in Norway.

When is the best time to visit the Faroe Islands?

If you’re planning a trip to the Faroe Islands, consider visiting during the summer. If you’re wanting to experience the best of the island’s wildlife possibilities, then visiting during May through August promises the best opportunity to see thousands of birds nest along the ragged cliffs. Yes, there are direct flights to the Faroe Islands. There are daily non-stop flights between Sørvágu Airport and Copenhagen, Denmark. There are also regular flights to Oslo, Norway and Reykjavík, Iceland. During the summer, there are additional direct flights to European cities including Paris, France, and Edinburgh, UK.

Can I fly to the Faroe Islands from the UK?

Yes, you can fly between Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland and Vágar Airport (FAE) with Atlantic Airways. If your flight search results suggest that no flights are available, this is because the airline only operates this route seasonally. And even during the summer the number of flights are limited. We suggest you search for flights on a different date. Edinburgh is the only airport in the UK with flights to the Faroe Islands.

Can I fly to the Faroe Islands from Paris?

Yes, during the summer months Atlantic Airways operates flights between Paris (Charles de Gaulle) and the Faroe Islands.
