What are domestic flights?

Iceland Flag Blue Round Border

A domestic flight in Iceland is any flight where the departure and arrival airport are both within Icelandic borders. For example, an Icelandic domestic flight would be a flight that departs from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) and arrives at Akureyri Airport (AEY). Although it's a tiny country, there are still a number of domestic flights within Iceland from regional airlines.

Despite being the national carrier of Iceland, Icelandair doesn't offer flights within the country and focuses solely on international flights.

Key Domestic Airlines

The following airlines offer flights within Iceland.

Air Iceland Connect

Air Iceland Connect is a regional airline based at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) and offers flights to Akureyri (AEY), EgilsstaðiR (EGS) and Ísafjörður (IFJ). Other than domestic flights, Air Iceland Connect also offers international flights to Greenland.

Air Iceland is a subsidiary of Icelandair, which is one of the reasons that Icelandair doesn't operate domestic flights itself.

Domestic flight check-in times

- Online: Online check-in opens 24 hours before scheduled flight departure time and closes two hours before.

- Airport: Check-in closes 15 minutes before scheduled flight departure time. It's recommended that passengers arrive at the check-in desk at least 45 minutes before their flight time.

Eagle Air

Eagle Air is an airline that only offers domestic flights within Iceland. The airline is based at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) and offers flights to Bildudalur (BIU), Gjogur (GJR), Hornafjodur (HFN), Husavik (HZK) and Vestmannaeyjar (VEY).

As well as scheduled flights, the airline also offers charter flights and adventure tours within the country.

Domestic flight check-in times

- Online: Eagle Air doesn't offer online check-in.

- Airport: It's recommended that passengers arrive at the check-in desk at the airport at least 90 minutes before scheduled flight departure time.

Norlandair

Norlandair is an Icelandic airline that offers flights around the country and to Greenland. The airline primarily offers charter flights. However, it does offer daily scheduled flights too.

Norlandair is unique because it's the only domestic Icelandic airline that is not based at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). Instead, the airline is based at Akureyri, from where it offers flights to Grimsey (GRY), Þórshöfn (THO) and Vopnafjörður (VPN).

Domestic flight check-in times

- Online: Norlandair doesn't offer online check-in.

- Airport: Passengers should arrive at the airport for check-in at least 90 minutes before scheduled flight departure time.

Why book domestic flights in
Iceland?

Although it's a small country, flying is still one of the most popular ways of travelling point to point in Iceland. Travelling by plane is by far the quickest way to travel. For example, the 5+ hour drive from Reykjavík to Akureyri takes just 45 minutes on a flight.

At times, flying might be the only option to travel around Iceland. During the winter, extreme weather conditions can cause driving to be unsafe and it's not unusual for many of the roads in the country to close.
