As an example, a popular domestic flight within Cuba is one that departs from Havana (HAV) and arrives in Santiago de Cuba (SCU). All Cuban internal flights are operated by Cuban airlines.
Despite being a small country, there a number of different domestic Cuban flight routes. No internal flight in Cuba is over 2.5 hours in flight time. Currently, there are only two airlines that offer domestic flights within Cuba — these are Cubana de Aviacíon and Aerogaviota.

Cubana de Aviacíon is the national airline and the main airline in the country. The airline was founded in 1929, which makes it one of the first and oldest Latin American airlines.
Cubana is based at José Martí International Airport, Havana (HAV) and domestic flights to destinations including Baracoa, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo del Sur, Camaguey, Guantanamo Bay, Holguin, Nueva Gerona and Santiago de Cuba.
Cubana de Aviacíon also connects the island with international destinations within Europe and South America.

Aerogaviota is a government-owned Cuban airline that offers flights throughout Cuba and to Jamaica. The airline is based at Jose Marti International Airport, Havana (HAV) and offers domestic flights to many destinations, including Baracoa, Cayo Coco, Havana, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
While Aerogaviota doesn't have the international presence that Cubana has, it makes a good alternative for internal flights within the country, operating flights on many of the same routes.

Although Cuba is a small country by surface area, it's long and narrow shape means that travelling across the country can take time, especially if travelling by road. Public transport on the island can be long, difficult to use and is subject to frequent delays and cancellations.
Even with the country's more reliable long-distance taxis, travelling from Havana to Santiago (one side of the country to the other) would take 11+ hours, without stopping at all. However, a flight between the same two cities takes just two hours.
There's no official law that requires you to have a passport for domestic flights. However, depending on the airline policy, you might be present a passport at check-in or before boarding.
At the very least, you'll need some form of photo identification in order to fly internally within Cuba. Therefore, it's advised that you use your passport to avoid any inconvenience.
Generally, airport check-in closes around one hour before scheduled flight departure time for domestic flights. Therefore, it's advised that you arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your scheduled flight departure, allowing more time if you have baggage to check.
On domestic flights, there is a maximum carry-on baggage allowance of 5kg.
