What is the Star Alliance?

Star Alliance is one of the world's largest global airline alliances. Located in the German city of Frankfurt, it is the longest-running of the top 3 airline alliances and in November 2016, became the largest global alliance with 689.98 million passenger members, ahead of SkyTeam and Oneworld.

  • Rewards program - The alliance has a two-tier rewards program, Silver and Gold, with incentives including priority boarding, cabin upgrades, and more.
  • Shared terminals - Like other airline alliances, Star Alliance airlines share airport terminals (known as co-location) and many member planes are painted in the alliance's livery.

Is Virgin Atlantic part of Star Alliance?

No, Virgin Atlantic is not part of the Star Alliance. Instead, Virgin Atlantic is part of the SkyTeam Alliance, which it joined on the 2nd March 2023.

Is British Airways part of Star Alliance?

No, British Airways is not part of the Star Alliance. However, they are a founding member of the Oneworld Alliance, which partners with airlines like BA, American Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific.

Which Star Alliance membership is best?

Which Star Alliance membership is the best for you depends on your own personal airline usage, which will determine what you will get out of the frequent flyer program.


For example, if you fly a lot with Air Canada then choosing Air Canada's Aeroplan program will give you the most benefits. So there is no right or wrong answer!
