The airline was established originally as Compañia Panameña de Aviación (providing the acronym COPA) in 1944 by a group of Panamanian investors assisted from Pan American Work Airways and began operating in August 1947. The airline began operating domestic flights with a small fleet of Douglas DC-3 aircraft and in the 1970s, they started international flights to Colombia, Costa Rica and Jamaica.

Copa Airlines allows women with less than 30 weeks of pregnancy to travel without a medical certificate. From the 30th week of pregnancy, Copa Airlines requires that you present a medical certificate stating that you're fit to fly and the date of expectancy.
