Viking Hellas, a private Greek airline based in Athens, agreed to form a joint venture with a German-Iraqi group for an Iraqi-based domestic airline.
The new airline will be called Viking Middle East with domestic flights planned for Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, and Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, according to an e- mailed statement sent today by the Athens International Airport Authority SA.
“By investing in this new joint venture, Viking Hellas has reduced its financial risk and strengthened its commercial position in Iraq,”
Viking Chief Executive Officer Roger Gatt said in the statement.
Viking Hellas currently operates flights from Athens to Erbil, Baghdad and Sulaymaniyah. It also operates routes to Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Stockholm along with charter flights for European tour operators.
