Emerald Airlines (Ireland) is a new Irish regional carrier.
The airline applied to the Republic’s Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) for an Air Carrier Operating Licence in 2020. In September 2021, the airline announced that it has been granted its Air Operator Certificate. The airline is now progressing towards the launch of scheduled services.
Emerald Airlines is backed by aviation entrepreneur Conor McCarthy, who is a majority shareholder and has extensive experience within the industry (he was the co-founder of AirAsia).
Emerald Airlines has entered into a franchise agreement with Aer Lingus Regional, which will commence on the first of January 2023 for a period of ten years for the operation of Aer Lingus Regional flights. Flights under the Aer Lingus Regional brand are currently suspended following the collapse of Stobart Air, the previous operator of Aer Lingus Regional flights.

Emerald Airlines Ireland has a different baggage policy for carry-on and checked baggage.
Carry-on Baggage
The baggage allowance for Aer Lingus regional services is a 7kg bag that is no larger than 48 x 33 x 20cm.
In addition, passengers are permitted one small personal item, such as a small handbag, a laptop case, camera case or reading material.
Checked Baggage

Cabin Classes
Emerald will act as a virtual airline, operating the flights under the Aer Lingus branding. In this case, the on-board experience, including baggage allowance, will be very similar to what passengers can enjoy when flying with Aer Lingus.

Emerald Airlines Ireland has different check-in opening and closing times depending on your method of check-in.
Online Check-in
Aer Lingus check-in will be available to complete online through the Aer Lingus website.
Airport Check-in
The airline has yet to publish its conditions of carriage, which will include information about check-in.
The majority of flights will operate from Dublin Airport. Dublin Airport advises passengers to arrive at check-in no later than 90 minutes prior to scheduled departure.

Emerald Airlines operates a modern fleet of ATR72-600 aircraft, the most fuel-efficient regional aircraft in the market. Each aircraft can seat up to 72 passengers. These aircraft also benefit from the widest cabin of any turboprop aircraft.

Emerald Airlines is working closely with Air Lingus to take over the ‘Aer Lingus Regional’ contract, which will expire in January 2023. Emerald Airlines has also recently announced that it has entered into a franchise agreement with Aer Lingus, which will commence on 1 January 2023 for a period of ten years for the operation of Aer Lingus Regional flights.

Emerald Airlines is bidding for the Aer Lingus Regional contract
Currently, Aer Lingus Regional operates routes from Ireland (Dublin) to destinations across the UK. However, Aer Lingus put its regional contract, which authorises the airline to operate regional services in Britain and Ireland, out for tender earlier this year (2020). It is expected that Emerald Airlines will be challenging other airlines, including Dublin-based Stobart Airlines, to win this contract.
