Domestic flights in Portugal make it easy to travel between the mainland and the country’s Atlantic islands, as well as quickly between cities within continental Portugal. Located in southern Europe and bordered by Spain to the north and east, Portugal also stretches out into the Atlantic with island regions that rely on air travel for fast, reliable connections.
While Portugal has a strong rail and road network, domestic flights in Portugal remain a popular option for travellers who want to save time — especially when flying between the mainland and the Azores or Madeira, or covering longer distances within the country.

Domestic flights, also referred to as internal flights are services that depart from and arrive in the same country. Even though a flight departing from Lisbon may fly over the Atlantic and land in the Azores Islands it is still a domestic service.
Check-in times differ from airline to airline. However, we recommend that you arrive for your domestic flight no later than 90 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.
Passports are usually required for flights departing or arriving in foreign countries. As you may be travelling domestically a passport as identification may not be required by the Portuguese government. However, some form of Identification may still be needed, such as a national ID card or driver's license, you can still use your passport for this. Please check with the airline you are travelling for their policy. Read more to discover about travel documents here.
Similar to check-in, baggage policies vary from airline to airline. Please check our dedicated airline pages for information on the luggage allowances or check your itinerary to see what is included.
