SATA Air Açores is a Portuguese airline based in São Sebastião, Ponta Delgada in the Azores, Portugal. It flies passenger flights and is based at João Paulo II Airport. The airline offers flights within Portugal, mainly flying within the Azores and connecting it with Madeira. The airline is a subsidiary of Azores Airlines, which originally went by the name of SATA International.

The airline launched flights from Santa Maria in 1947 under the name Sociedade Açoreana de Transportes Aéreos. The airline's goal has always been to offer better connectivity within the Azores region and today is one of the leading airlines within the Azores. It flies to 10 destinations overall, including destinations within the Azores and Madeira.

The airline rebranded as SATA Air Açores in 1980, shortly after it was acquired and became a full subsidiary of Azores Airlines. It has operated under the SATA Air Açores name since.

Baggage

Carry-on Baggage

Passengers are permitted one carry-on bag, measuring 55 cm (21.5") x 40 cm (15.5") x 20 cm (8") and weighing a maximum of 8kg.

In addition, passengers are allowed permitted a personal item, including items such as a coat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a handbag, reading material for the flight and laptop bag.

Checked Baggage

The free checked baggage allowance will differ depending on the fare that the passenger has purchased.

Passengers with the Discount fare are given a free allowance of 23 kg.

Passengers with the Smart fare are given a free allowance of 35 kg.

Passengers with the Value fare are given a free allowance of 46 kg.

No one piece of checked baggage should weigh more than 32kg.

Passengers with a Goldsky card are permitted 10kg more than the paid class allowance.

Babies and infants are permitted 10kg of checked luggage.

Cabin Class

Economy

Economy Class is the only cabin that SATA Air Açores flies with. Due to its short flight times and smaller aircraft, the airline flies with just the one cabin.

Facilities

The facilities on each flight depend on each individual flight. On longer flights, there will be food, drink and some form of in-flight entertainment. On shorter flights, food and drink won't be served onboard and there might not be any in-flight entertainment.

What are Seats Like?

Economy Class seats have an average space between rows of 30 cm.

Check-In Information

Online Check-In

As part of Azores Airlines, passengers can check-in online via the Azores Airlines check-in page. Web check-in opens 48 hours before your flight and will close 1h 15 minutes before flight departure time. This service is only available for certain flights and routes, so it's important for passengers to check that they're eligible to check-in online.

Airport Check-In

For passengers who have been unable to check-in online, they must check-in at the check-in counters at the airport. Airport check-in is also available for anyone that wants to use it. For inter-island flights within the Azores, passengers can check-in between 1h30min to 30 mins before their flight.

Food & Drink

Meals aren't served on any flights. Light snacks and drinks may be served on shorter flights, however, food and drink aren't guaranteed on any flight.

Passengers can bring their own food and drink onto the flight, as long as it's allowed through airport security.

In-flight Entertainment

On longer domestic flights, the airline gives each passenger a copy of the SATA Air Açores in-flight magazine which offers high-quality articles and news coverages, as well as general information on SATA and Azores Airlines services and destinations.

On select flights, colouring books, colouring pencils and games will are provided to younger passengers on board. The Looping magazine is also available on select SATA Air Açores flights. The magazine is a fun and easy read made especially for passengers aged between 8 and 12 years of age.

The airline could possibly upgrade its in-flight entertainment in the future, as parent airline Azores Airlines has an in-flight entertainment system that is available to enjoy through personal devices.

Joao Paulo II Airport

Joao Paulo II Airport is an international airport located on the island of Sao Miguel, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It is SATA Air Açores hub airport and is located near to Ponta Delgada. It is the busiest and primary airport in the Azores. Joao Paulo II Airport hasn't always been the hub for SATA Air Açores, the airline was originally based at Santa Maria Airport.

The airport has scheduled domestic airlines to all islands of the Azores, plus Madeira and the mainland, namely Lisbon, Porto and Faro. The Airport also accommodates international flights to and from Europe and North American from its only runway.
