LaTam AIrlines, LAN + TAM merger follows AVIANCA + TACA in South American consolidation

LaTam AIrlines, LAN + TAM merger follows AVIANCA + TACA in South American consolidation

Brazilian airline TAM has announced plans to complete a merger with LAN airlines of Chile.
The merger of LAN and TAM  follows the merger late last year of South American rivals Avianca of Colombia and TACA of Central America. The new TAM/LAN merger will create the largest carrier in Latin America.

The combined airline will operate services to 115 destinations in 23 countries, with 40,000 employess. L. The new carrier would be named the Latam Airlines Group and the airlines' brands would remain separate.  TAM is a member of the Star Alliance group of airlines, which includes BMI, Lufthansa, SAS and Air China. Meanwhile LAN is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance, which includes Iberia, British Airways, Qantas and JAL, it is presumed that the merged group will choose either STAR or OneWorld as part of the merger rationalisation.
