Hamad International Airport is Qatar's only international airport. It is located just outside of the capital Doha, and was built to replace the original Doha International Airport, making it known as the New Doha International Airport. The airport was originally intended to open for operations in 2009 but did not open until 5 years later in April 2014.
The planning to replace the Doha International Airport took part in 2003 and involved the design to increase the capacity and potential traffic volume from the previous airport. Construction began in 2005, but had its initial opening date of 2009 moved back to 2014.
The airport is a hub for Qatar Airways, Qatar Airways Cargo and Qatar Executive. The airport's annual capacity is 50 million passengers, and 2017 saw the airport handle 35,270,410 passenger movements. The airport is located southeast of Qatar's capital, Doha, close to the location of the previous airport. It was built on reclaimed land, and measures over 22 square km.
DOH is well-known across the world for its world-class and luxurious facilities, with an oasis theme such as water motifs, wave-style roofs and desert plants found around the airport, which are hydrated with recycled water. The airport itself is about two-thirds of the size of Doha city.
