Domestic flights in the USA FAQs

Do I need a passport for domestic US flights?

If you're a US citizen, then no, you won't need a passport.

But you'll still need some form of photographic identification compliant with the Real-ID Act.

Children under 18 are not required to provide ID when flying domestically and travelling with an adult. We recommend contacting the airline you're travelling with to ensure there are no additional policies.

If you're flying within the US but not a US resident, you will need to bring your passport.

How early do I need to arrive for domestic flights in the USA?

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) recommends arriving at the airport 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights to allow time for check-in, bag drop and security.

However, different airlines and airports have different cut-off times.

Are there defunct airlines in the U.S. that no longer fly?

Over the years, many US airlines have unfortunately ceased operations. The most recent was Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations in May 2026.

Other defunct airlines include Pan American World Airlines (ceased in 1991), North American Airlines (ceased in 2014), and Trans States Airlines. Find out more in our blog: Airlines that we loved and lost.

When is the best time to find cheap domestic flights?

As explored in our blog on the cheapest day to buy flights, there is no set day or time to buy the cheapest tickets.

However, if you purchase flights for the off-peak season, you'll be able to save considerably. You can also spend less on flights by booking a night flight. Flights departing and landing at obscure times tend to have less demand and cheaper fares.

Another way to make financing domestic flights easier is by spreading the cost into instalments. Buy now, pay later plans let you pay in manageable instalments that fit your budget.

How much baggage can I take on domestic flights within the USA?

Checked baggage policies vary significantly by airline and fare type.

Most airlines will offer free hand luggage when travelling domestically within the USA.

Many US domestic airlines charge extra for checked baggage, with a typical weight limit of 50 lbs / 23 kg.

Are domestic flights the same as interstate flights?

Interstate flights are flights between different states. All interstate flights in the US are domestic flights, however, not all domestic flights can considered interstate flights.

For example, a flight departing from Los Angeles and arriving in San Francisco cannot be considered 'interstate' as both cities are in the same state of California. Read our guide on interstate flights in the USA to find out more information.
