Burundi Travel Advice

Most governments advise against all travel to Cibitoke and all travel on the main RN6 and RN10 roads running west from Kayanza through the Kibira National Park towards Cibitoke, as well as all travel to areas of Bujumbura Rural Province west of the Rusizi river towards the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo, including Rusizi National Park (also known as Rusizi Delta Nature Reserve) due to the presence of a rebel group in the Kibira National Park and possible armed incursions from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Burundi Travel Tips

  • Prioritise safety and stay informed: Always put your safety first in Burundi; avoid walking alone at night and be aware of your surroundings. Check your government's latest travel advisories before and during your trip, especially if travelling outside Bujumbura, and avoid discussing politics or joining public gatherings.
  • Get vaccinated: Consult a travel health professional well before your trip for recommended vaccinations, including the mandatory Yellow Fever shot, and discuss anti-malarial medication. Always drink bottled or boiled water, protect yourself from mosquito bites, and ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
  • Ensure Visas and Currencies are in order: Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival, but always confirm the latest requirements with a Burundian embassy. US Dollars are widely accepted, but ATMs can be unreliable, so bring enough cash for your stay and consider exchanging money at official bureaux de change.
  • Respect local customs: Dress modestly, especially outside Bujumbura, to show respect for the conservative culture. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, and avoid photographing government or military sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What language do they speak in Burundi?

Burundi has three official languages:
Kirundi: This is the national language and is spoken by the vast majority of the population (around 98%). It's a Bantu language and is unique in Africa for being the single indigenous language shared by almost the entire population of the country.

French: As a legacy of Belgian colonial rule, French holds an important role in government, business, and education, particularly among the educated classes.

English: English became an official language in 2014, reflecting Burundi's increasing engagement with the East African Community, where English is a prominent language.

Which season is best to visit Burundi?

The best times to visit Burundi are during its two dry seasons: the long dry season from June to August and the short dry season from December to January. These periods offer more pleasant temperatures, less rainfall, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities and exploring the country's natural beauty. The rest of the year experiences wetter conditions, which can make travel and activities more challenging.

Burundi's landscape is diverse, ranging from the low-lying Rusizi Plain along Lake Tanganyika in the west to the high central plateau and mountainous regions that form part of the Congo-Nile watershed. Pack a diverse set of clothes to be prepared for each climate.

Is Burundi expensive?

While Burundi is a less-developed country, it can be surprisingly expensive for visitors, largely due to high costs for international flights, visas (around $90 USD), and accommodation that meets international standards. Although local food and public transport are cheap, organized tours and activities can be very costly, sometimes hundreds of dollars per day, making overall budgeting challenging. Bringing sufficient cash, preferably USD, is crucial as ATM access is unreliable.

Is Burundi safe?

Burundi's safety situation is complex and requires careful consideration. While the country is generally more stable than it has been in the past, several governments (including the UK, Canada, US, and Australia) currently advise against non-essential travel or even all travel to certain areas.

There's a history of political instability and sporadic violence, particularly around past elections. While large-scale conflict is not ongoing, politically motivated attacks, including grenade attacks, can occur, even in Bujumbura. Public gatherings should be avoided.
