Colombia's Easyfly to launch five new routes in 2018

Colombian regional airline EasyFly will launch five new routes this year as it adds more ATR 42-600s to its fleet, expecting to grow traffic 35% year-over-year in 2018.

EasyFly president Alfonso Avila says the airline acquired more of the turboprops as it is well suited to operations and demand in Colombia.

The airline transported almost one million passengers in 2017, and aims to grow this to 1.35 million this year.

The new routes will be Pereira to Bucaramanga, Bahía Solano to Medellin and Bogota, Bucaramanga to Santa Marta, and Bogota to Puerto Asis.

In early 2019, the airline plans to add a highly competitive route to its regional network, launching flights between Pereira and Cali.

While reaffirming the airline's commitment with regional routes, Avila indicates that the airline will not shy away from competing with mainline carriers on trunk routes.

"Last year we started operating between Pereira and Bogota. Despite competing with Avianca and LATAM, we are offering 16 weekly frequencies," he says, adding that this underlies the demand EasyFly has seen.

He is also satisfied with the recent terminal reorganisation at Bogota airport, which saw EasyFly move from the El Dorado terminal to Avianca’s former Puente Aereo domestic terminal that is now being used for regional operations.

Operating from the smaller terminal has improved access to aircraft and the runway, he says. "This has been a very positive change”, he adds.

EasyFly plans for growth; possible alliance with LATAM

EasyFly president Alfonso Avila plans to grow his carrier by 40% in 2018 as it introduces three new ATR42s in the 2H of the year. The projected figures follow recorded growth of 30% in 2017, on back of US$66.3 million in revenues.

In the next five years, the airline plans to double the number of its passengers, increase its fleet to 22 aircraft, fly to more remote areas in Colombia, open a base in Cali, and resume its oil routes.

To fund its expansion, the airline is open to raising further capital or using its own cash on hand. The company shareholding was recently increased to five partners, following a US$7.7 million injection from a new shareholder.

EasyJet will also revist talks with LATAM for a possible alliance, including a codeshare agreement.

EasyFly, Fresh Off Acquiring Two New Planes, Launches New Flight from Bogotá to Manizales

Colombian discount airline EasyFly today began operating a new flight from Bogotá to Manizales, offering at least one new route in a country currently dealing with fewer air travel options due to the ongoing pilot strike at Avianca. The small Bogotá-based airline, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, is counting the new flight from the national capital to the capital of the Caldas department as part of its larger expansion efforts to increase service in Colombia.

Currently, nearly half of its roughly 30 routes include a stop at Olaya Herrera Airport, the smaller of the two airports that serve Medellín. Adding a flight from Bogotá to Manizales will provide both business and tourism travelers another option, as Manizales is the largest city in Colombia’s coffee region and the closest city to the popular Los Nevados National Park. This news comes fresh off the heels of EasyFly acquiring two new planes. The two aircraft are both French ATR 42-600s and each cost around $18 million USD, although they were procured through a leasing arrangement, according to Colombian magazine Portafolio. The first reportedly arrived from Europe on September 14.

Prior to the additions, EasyFly was operating with only a fleet of 13 ATR 42-500 aircraft, each with capacity for 42 people, per Portafolio. The company’s president, Alfonso Ávila, has said that one key goal of adding more planes is to begin servicing the western part of the country, including Cali, Pasto, Tumaco, and Chocó, where EasyFly has not had regular flights.
