What are Domestic Flights?

Domestic flights fly internally, meaning departure and arrival both take place within the same country. These flights tend to be available in bigger countries, such as within the USA, India, and Australia, and are also referred to as short-haul flights, meaning they tend to have a duration of 2-4 hours.

Internal flights within Australia are available through numerous air carriers, including Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar. Carriers such as Tiger Airways offer a cheap alternative, although they don't offer the level of service in comparison to the others.

Melbourne, Australia

Why Book Domestic Flights Within Australia?

Australia is a stunning and vast country. From the rugged Kalbarri in the West, to the cultral hub of Melbourne in the South, catching an internal flight is the best way to experience all that the country has to offer.

Domestic flights are available from all of Australia's major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Darwin. Cheap flights can also be found from smaller airports, including the stunning Gold Coast and Proserpine.

How to Book Cheap Australian Domestic Flights?

1. Fly with a low-cost airline

For cheaper fares, book flights with one of the many low-cost airlines that operate within Australia, rather than a more expensive full-cost carrier. Book flights with one of these low-cost airlines: Jetstar, Scoot, Tiger airways and Virgin Australia.

Did you know, when you search for flights through Alternative Airlines you can filter the search results to only view flights with a specific airline?

2. Spread the cost of your flights

Okay, so paying over time doesn’t reduce the total cost of your flights. However, splitting the cost into monthly instalments rather than having to pay the full amount upfront can make the flying more affordable in the longer-term. We offer lots of payment plan options including Klarna and Laybuy among others. Discover all our payment plan options.

3. Apply a discount code

Follow us on Social Media or subscribe to our mailing list and you’ll be the first to hear of our latest discounts and deals. Some codes are specific to a payment method, such as PayPal. Australian Flights FAQs

What is the national airline of Australia?

Qantas Airways is the national airline of Australia. It is also the largest airline based in Australia, by its total number of international destinations and the size of its fleet. The airline also owns Jetstar Australia which flies regionally within the country.

Are there any discount airlines in Australia?

If you’re looking for cheaper fares, book flights with low-cost discount airlines in Australia, including Jetstar, Scoot, Tiger Airways and Virgin Australia. You can book flights with any of these airlines through Alternative Airlines.

Is a passport required when travelling domestically in Australia?

All passengers, including children and infants, are required to provide ID on flights within Australia. ID can include a passport, driver's licence, or birth certificate. So if you are Australian and have any other listed identification, then a passport is not required.

Do I need a passport if traveling to Tasmania from Australia?

Tasmania is an isolated island state off Australia’s south coast. Technically, no, a passport is not required to fly from Australia to Tasmania, but for practical purposes, it is recommended! Tasmania passport requirements state that a passport is not required to visit Tasmania. However, you will need one to enter back into Australia. A visa is also required to visit the country, but those travelling for tourism or business for less than 90 days can opt to obtain a label-free visa known as an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) for a small fee.

Do I still need to go through security if travelling on a domestic flight in Australia?

Passengers travelling on flights that don't leave the country's airspace still need to comply with all airport security procedures and are still subject to screening prior to arriving in the boarding area. However, travellers are not required to pass through customs or immigration before boarding. On arrival, passengers are able to disembark and head straight to baggage claim, without having to pass through immigration or customs.

How much baggage can I take on an internal flight?

Most airlines will offer free hand luggage when travelling in Australia. We always recommend checking with each airline to find out more!

Qantas: Baggage is included on every Qantas fare. No single piece can exceed 32kg.

REX Regional Express: one carry-on baggage and a personal item is allowed. Carry-on baggage cannot exceed 23cm (9in) x 34cm (13in) x 48cm (19in) and not heavier than 7kg.

JetStar: Starter fares include a baggage allowance of two carry-on items weighing up to 7kg. For additional carry-on weight, you will need to purchase a Flex bundle or Business Class fare. All check-in baggage will need to be purchased.

Tiger Airways: two pieces of carry-on luggage are allowed, provided that each does not exceed the dimensions of 54in x15in x 9in. Checked-in baggage will require an upgrade.

Are domestic flights the same as interstate flights?

They can be! All interstate flights are domestic, not all domestic flights are interstate. If a domestic flight departs and lands in two different states within the boundaries of a single country then it is also an interstate flight. If the flight departs and lands within a single state, the flight can be referred to as domestic but not interstate.

What is the internal flight check-in time for flights within Australia?

This will depend on the airline that you're flying on. But, generally, check-in tends to open 48–24 hours before check-in and can close anywhere between 60–30 minutes before.

Do you need a passport to fly on a flight that doesn't leave Australian airspace?

Again, this will depend on the airline, but usually, only a form of photo ID, such as a driver's licence, or passport, is required.
