Hub Airport

Malta International Airport

Malta International Airport, otherwise known as Luqa Airport, is the only airport in Malta and serves the whole of the Maltese Islands. Located in Luqa, the capital city of Malta, the airport serves as the main hub for Air Malta, the sister airline to Malta MedAir. It's also a hub for Lauda Europe and Malta Air.

Starting off as Malta's first civil airfield in 1920, the airport has experienced major developments due to the increase in passengers arriving in Malta. In 1958, a new passenger terminal was inaugurated by the then Governor of Malta, Sir Robert Laycock. A new and longer runway was built in 1977 and in 1992 the current passenger terminal was inaugurated making the airport fully functional. After these developments, the old Luqa Airport was effectively shut down after 35 years of service.

The airport has its own VIP lounge, the La Valette Club, as well as other facilities including airside and landside shops, restaurants and other outlets.

Fleet

The Malta MedAir fleet consists of 2 aircraft, both of which are Airbus 320s. The A320 can carry 168 passengers.

As of April 2022, one of the A320s is being leased to Corendon Airlines, and as of March 2022 the second A320 is currently being stored in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Malta MedAir is currently awaiting the delivery of its third A320.

Destinations

Before Malta MedAir become inactive, its frequent destinations include London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Warsaw, Bucharest and other European cities, however, most of the airlines' flights were made by request.

Pets, Emotional Support Animals and Service Animals on Malta MedAir

There are two options for flying with pets on Malta MedAir - bringing your pet (cat or small dog) into the cabin inside an airline-approved carrier and not exceeding a weight of 10kg including the carrier, or as checked baggage (cats, dogs, hares, rabbits, ferrets and birds) not exceeding 32kg including the carrier.

If you are wanting to fly with either a pet, service animal or emotional support animal, you can see all information and advice by Alternative Airlines about travelling with an animal.
