When it comes to domestic travel in the Bahamas, the top 3 airlines are defined by their reach, fleet size, and frequency. While international giants like American or Delta fly to the Bahamas, these three local carriers are the workhorses that move you between the islands.
1. Bahamasair (The National Flag Carrier)
As the government-owned airline, Bahamasair is the largest and most reliable for reaching nearly every corner of the archipelago.
- Main Hub: Lynden Pindling International (NAS), Nassau.
- Where it flies: It has the most extensive network, serving major hubs like Freeport and Exuma, but also remote "Family Islands" like Acklins, Crooked Island, and Mayaguana.
Western Air is the largest privately owned airline in the Bahamas and is often cited by locals as the most convenient for its frequent "shuttle-style" flights.
- Main Hub: Grand Bahama International (FPO), Freeport, with a major terminal in Nassau.
- Where it flies: They specialise in high-traffic routes between Nassau, Freeport, Marsh Harbour (Abaco), and Exuma.
3. Southern Air Charter
While it has "Charter" in the name, Southern Air operates consistent, scheduled daily flights that are vital for island hopping. Unfortunately, we don't offer Southern Air Charter flights at Alternative Airlines at the moment.
- Main Hub: Nassau (NAS).
- Where it flies: They are the go-to for routes to Eleuthera (North Eleuthera, Governor’s Harbour, and Rock Sound) and Long Island (Stella Maris and Deadman’s Cay).
