Airports near Sintra
Now you know some ways of flying to Sintra, you'll have to consider where to land. Here are 4 of the best airports for accessing Sintra.
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) – Lisbon
This is the primary international gateway to Portugal and the most practical choice for visiting Sintra. Located roughly 30 km (18 miles) away, the journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes by car or an hour via a direct train from Lisbon's Rossio or Oriente stations. As a major hub, it serves flights from all over the world, making it the most likely arrival point for most travellers.
Cascais Municipal Aerodrome (CAT) – Cascais
Commonly known as Tires Airport, this is the closest airfield to Sintra, situated only 15 km (9 miles) to the south. While it does not host major commercial airlines like Ryanair or TAP, it is the premier choice for private jets and regional charters. If you are traveling via private aviation or a specialized domestic shuttle, this airport provides the quickest access to Sintra’s historic center, often reachable in under 20 minutes.
Faro International Airport (FAO) – Algarve
Serving the southern coast of Portugal, Faro Airport is located about 300 km (186 miles) from Sintra. It is a major hub for low-cost carriers (LCCs) and seasonal holiday flights from across Europe. Travelers choosing this route usually do so to combine a trip to the Algarve beaches with a visit to the capital region, necessitating a three-hour drive or a roughly four-hour train journey north to reach Sintra.
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) – Porto
Located in the north of the country, Porto’s airport is approximately 335 km (208 miles) from Sintra. It is frequently ranked as one of the best airports in Europe and serves as a great entry point if you plan to tour Portugal from north to south. Reaching Sintra from here typically involves a 3.5-hour drive via the A1 motorway or a high-speed Alfa Pendular train to Lisbon, followed by a local connection.
Book flights to Sintra
Sintra feels less like a town and more like a fever dream of 19th-century Romanticism. It is a place where dense, misty forests meet extravagant palaces, creating an atmosphere that feels completely detached from the modern world. Most visitors are drawn by its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering a concentrated collection of architectural wonders from the candy-colored towers of the Pena Palace to the sombre, ancient stone ramparts of the Moorish Castle.
Sintra hides a world of mystery and symbolism. The Quinta da Regaleira, for instance, is a playground of secret tunnels, hidden grottoes, and the famous "Initiation Well", an inverted tower that descends deep into the earth. For those who enjoy a blend of history and nature, the town’s microclimate keeps the landscape lush and green even in the height of summer, providing a refreshing escape from the heat of nearby Lisbon.
Booking flights to Lisbon couldn't be easier with Alternative Airlines. Our quick and easy booking system lets you choose from 600+ airlines and 40+ payment methods, including Cryptocurrency. Book your flights to Lisbon today to begin a hassle-free journey.
Things to do in Sintra
Sintra is a rising star destination for a reason, there's loads of stuff to do! Here are our top 3:
Pena National Palace
Often cited as the crown jewel of Sintra, the Pena National Palace is a vibrant masterpiece of 19th-century Romanticism. Recognisable by its bold red-and-yellow facades, the palace blends Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, and Islamic architectural styles to create a "fairytale" aesthetic.
Visitors can explore opulent royal chambers and wander through the surrounding Pena Park, a vast labyrinth of exotic trees, hidden pavilions, and sweeping viewpoints that overlook the Atlantic coastline.
Quinta da Regaleira
For those drawn to mystery and symbolism, Quinta da Regaleira is an unmissable estate designed with Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline influences.
While the palace itself is stunning, the true allure lies in its enigmatic gardens, which are filled with grottoes, lakes, and secret underground tunnels. The highlight is the Initiation Well, a 27-meter "inverted tower" with a spiralling stone staircase that was historically used for ceremonial purposes and Masonic rituals.
The Castle of the Moors
Offering the most dramatic views in the region, the Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) is an 8th-century fortress that snakes along a rugged mountain ridge.
Unlike the colourful palaces nearby, this site consists of ancient stone ramparts and weathered battlements that reflect its military history as a strategic lookout during the Moorish era. Walking along its high walls provides a panoramic perspective of the town, the neighbouring Pena Palace, and the distant hills stretching toward Lisbon.

Sintra Frequently Asked Questions
Which airport do I fly into for Sintra?
Since Sintra is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the mountains, there is no commercial airport in the town itself. You will fly into Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS)
What is the fastest way to get from the airport to Sintra?
If you want to skip the logistics and get straight to the palaces, you have two main "fast" options:
Uber/Bolt. These are very popular in Portugal. A ride usually costs €25–€40 and takes about 30 to 40 minutes in normal traffic.
Private Transfer: Pre-booking a driver (like Welcome Pickups) is the most seamless option; they meet you at arrivals with a sign. This is usually around €40.
Can I take the train directly from the airport?
No, there is no direct train. You have to make one quick transfer:
Step 1: Take the Metro (Red Line) from the airport to Oriente Station (only 3 stops away, approx. 7 minutes).
Step 2: Switch to the CP Train (Sintra Line). Trains depart every 15–20 minutes and take about 47 minutes to reach the Sintra terminal.
Total Cost: Roughly €4.50 (including the reusable Viva Viagem card).
Should I rent a car at the airport to drive to Sintra?
Generally, no. This is a common "rookie mistake."
Parking in Sintra’s historic centre is nearly impossible and extremely expensive. Many roads leading to major palaces (such as Pena Palace) are restricted to local residents, buses, and taxis only. Unless you are using Sintra as a base to explore the far-off Atlantic beaches (like Praia da Ursa), you are better off using rideshares or the local 434 tourist bus once you arrive.
