Book Flights to Chad

Chad, situated in north-central Africa, is a land of dramatic contrasts. In the north, you'll find the Sahara Desert with its iconic sand dunes and scorching hot temperatures. The Sahel region sits in the centre, home to nomadic herders. And in the south lies the fertile savannah, watered by the Chari and Logone rivers. Most of Chad's population resides in N'Djamena in the south, a capital city with a mixture of French colonial architecture and chaotic markets.

While in Chad, we recommend visiting cultural sites, such as the Sahelian towns of Fada N'Gourma and Abeche, as well as going on a safari in the Sahara Desert and exploring the shores of Lake Chad.

At Alternative Airlines, we have a selection of over 600 airlines available to book flights with, so you're bound to find a flight to Chad that suits your travel plans. We even offer over 40 different ways to pay for these flights, including flexible pay-later plans and cryptocurrencies - the possibilities are endless.

Book your flights to any city of your choice in Chad today with Alternative Airlines, including flights to N'Djamena, Sarh, Abéché and Moundou, among others.

Chad, N'Djamena

Discover N'Djamena

On the southwestern border of Chad, you'll find its capital, N'Djamena. This city is the centre of commerce for Chad, with cotton, cattle and fish being integral parts of its economy. One of the most notable landmarks in N'Djamena is the Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Central Africa. The National Museum of Chad is also in N'Djamena, housing a collection of artefacts that tell the story of Chad's past and present. Chad has French influences dating back to the early 20th century - evidence of this can be found at Fort Lamy, a French colonial fort using N'Djamena as a strategic base in World War II.

If you're interested in visiting N'Djamena, the best time to go is in the dry season, from December to February. Temperatures are generally lower and you'll also be avoiding the floods, where N'Djamena sits in an alluvial plain. To reach N'Djamena, book flights to N'Djamena International Airport. This is the only airport in Chad and is reachable from select cities in Europe and Africa, therefore, connecting flights may be necessary. Don't worry - you can book your connecting flights to N'Djamena easily through Alternative Airlines, all under one itinerary!

Things to Do in Chad

Thinking of visiting Chad but unsure where to start? Here are some great activities to include in your trip!

Visit Zakouma National Park

Zakouma is a remarkable conservation success story. The park, managed in partnership with the Chadian government by the non-profit organization African Parks, was once a victim of heavy poaching.

Located in the southeastern part of the country, the park is a prime location for safaris, offering a chance to see vast herds of elephants, lions, giraffes, and a diverse array of other wildlife and bird species.

Explore the Ennedi Plateau

This UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northeast of the country is a geological marvel. The landscape is a maze of towering rock formations, natural arches, and deep canyons, all carved by wind and water over millennia. You can find ancient rock art, trek through surreal landscapes, and discover hidden oases.

A highlight is the Guelta d'Archei, a permanent waterhole at the base of a deep gorge where nomadic herders bring their camel caravans to drink. The plateau is a destination for adventurous travelers, requiring a skilled local guide and a multi-day expedition to explore its wonders.

Orange Icon

Behold the Lakes of Ounianga

Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this series of 18 interconnected lakes in the Sahara Desert creates a surreal and breathtaking waterscape. The lakes have different colours, from blue to green to red, due to their varying chemical compositions, and they are surrounded by striking desert scenery.

This series of 18 interconnected lakes is situated in the hyper-arid Sahara Desert, where annual rainfall is less than 2mm. The lakes are sustained by a remarkable "fossil water" aquifer, ancient water that has been trapped underground since a wetter period thousands of years ago.

Chad Travel Tips

  • Prioritise Safety and Security. Due to the country's volatile security situation, hiring a reputable security team or a specialised tour operator is essential. Always stay informed about the local situation, remain vigilant, and limit your travel to secure, pre-arranged transport.
  • Take Health Precautions. The C.A.R. is a high-risk area for infectious diseases, and medical facilities are limited. A Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for entry, and other vaccinations are highly recommended. Be sure to pack a comprehensive first-aid kit and practice strict food and water safety to prevent illness.
  • Manage Money and Documents Carefully. Financial infrastructure is underdeveloped. It's crucial to carry a certified copy of your passport and other key documents while keeping originals secure. Since ATMs and credit cards are rarely accepted, you must bring enough cash for your entire trip, preferably in Euros for easier exchange.
  • Respect Local Laws and Customs. To avoid legal trouble, understand local regulations, such as the strict laws against unauthorised photography of government buildings and military personnel. Be culturally sensitive, dress modestly, and remember that it is illegal to purchase diamonds or other precious stones from non-authorised agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What language do they speak in Chad?

Chad is a multilingual country with a complicated linguistic landscape. The two official languages are French and Arabic.

Chadian Arabic is the country's most widely spoken language and serves as a lingua franca for commerce and communication among different ethnic groups. It's a vernacular version of Arabic and is spoken by a significant portion of the population.

French is primarily used in government, education, and by the urban elite, particularly in the capital city of N'Djamena.

Which season is best to visit Chad?

The best time to visit Chad is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. This period is ideal for travel as the unpaved roads, often impassable during the rainy season, become accessible, allowing visitors to explore remote areas like the Ennedi Plateau and the national parks.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the dry season offers the best safari opportunities in Zakouma National Park, as animals gather around scarce water sources. The weather is also more favorable, with sunny skies and more predictable conditions for outdoor activities, though temperatures can still be very high in certain regions.

Do I need a visa to enter Chad?

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Chad. The only exceptions are for citizens of a select few countries, primarily those from Central African nations and a handful of other countries with specific visa exemption agreements.

You will need to obtain a visa in advance from a Chadian embassy or consulate. Some sources indicate that an e-visa system has been launched, and in some cases, visas may be available on arrival with the proper paperwork and pre-arranged invitation letters. However, the process can be complex and it's essential to verify the most current requirements with a Chadian embassy or consulate in your country of residence before you travel.

Additionally, regardless of your nationality, you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival. If you plan to stay for more than 72 hours, you are also required to register with the local police.

Is visiting Chad safe?

Visiting Chad is generally considered high-risk due to a complex security situation. Many governments advise against all but essential travel, with "do not travel" warnings for border areas and the Lake Chad region due to the presence of armed groups and terrorism.

Travellers face risks including violent crime, kidnapping, and civil unrest. For those who do go, it's crucial to have a comprehensive safety plan, including hiring professional security, travelling in a convoy outside the capital, registering with their embassy, and securing robust travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Additionally, all travel outside the capital requires a permit from the Ministry of the Interior.
