It's an important boost for any region when UNESCO decide to declare them designated World Heritage sites and the recent announcement that the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia has just received this accolade is great news for this Northern part of Colombia and excellent news for Colombia as a whole.
UNESCO says: "The Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia (Colombia) - an exceptional example of a sustainable and productive cultural landscape that is unique and representative of a tradition that is a strong symbol for coffee growing areas worldwide - encompasses six farming landscapes, which include 18 urban centres on the foothills of the western and central ranges of the Cordillera de los Andes in the west of the country. It reflects a centennial tradition of coffee growing in small plots in the high forest and the way farmers have adapted cultivation to difficult mountain conditions. The urban areas, mainly situated on the relatively flat tops of hills above sloping coffee fields, are characterized by the architecture of the Antioquian colonization with Spanish influence. Building materials were, and remain in some areas, cob and pleated cane for the walls with clay tiles for the roofs."
We say: "Colombia is a fabulous country to visit, we recommend you grab an intercontinental Avianca flight from Madrid to fascinating Bogota, then a domestic Avianca flight to Medeliin to be one of the first to explore the "coffee culture" and end your stay with some relaxing in the laid back Caribbean city of Cartagena". Alternative Airlines has been a strong partner of Avianca since our launch 4 years ago and we have some great international fares and special domestic air passes to help you enjoy everything that Colombia has to offer. Use the online booking for all flights except the airpass where you need to call us on (44) 1293 874 920 for details.
