According to James Chapman, director of Outreach International, there are two types of benefits - those for the person travelling and the ones experienced by those in the host nation.
He asserted that for young people, travelling overseas enables them to live within a community and often gives them the opportunity to learn a foreign language.
"It's very different from just travelling," he stated.
Mr Chapman added that gap years are an opportunity for people to integrate with those they end up working with or living with while abroad.
This comes after Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com stated that going overseas for a year can be a positive thing to put on a CV, particularly when compared to staying at home and doing nothing.
He recommended that those who struggle to find jobs in the UK consider travelling to another country to look for employment.
