More people may be booking SpiceJet flights to India to visit Kolkata in the coming years as the city is part of an urban renewal scheme.
Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, has stated that she wants to model the metropolis on London by improving the riverfront area, reports the AFP.
The location could even feature a huge ferris wheel similar to the London Eye.
"My dream is to beautify the ten-kilometre riverfront of the city of Kolkata on the lines of London," Ms Banerjee stated.
Sovan Chatterjee, mayor of Kolkata, added that the project would transform the area into a "heritage cultural zone".
He revealed that the scheme will include "landscaped paths, places for meditation, food outlets, parks and an art gallery and museum".
The development is scheduled to be completed in January 2013.
Kolkata has a particularly important part in British history as it was the base of the Raj until 1911 when it was shifted to New Delhi.
