Tonight we are hearing from local press reports that the Spanish airline, Spanair is ceasing flying following the decision by Qatar Airways to pull out of take over talks. This follows on from the announcement earlier this week that Italian giant. Alitalia is due to swallow smaller Italian independents, Blue Panorama and Windjet. Consolidation of airlines is inevitable as costs increase. particularly fuel prices and the erosion of the Euro against dollar, bites in an industry already squeezed by the low ticket prices offered by newer lower cost entrants. It is always sad to see an airline stop flying and it is particularly sad when it one with a 25 year old history in innovation and good customer service. Today's market place is fierce and the loss of an airline gives their competitors breathing space to grow. 2012 will be a year when the best survive and the rest lose their independence.. for our passengers, we will keep you informed as changes occur and where the best - and safest buys - can be found.
