Heather Carswell, a spokeswoman for the travel guides publisher, said taking short breaks abroad can help to provide vacationers with a "taste" of what a destination has to offer.

"Flights to destinations throughout Europe can cost a similar amount as a train fare within the UK.
"Taking a short trip can be a fantastic way of getting a taste of the country," Ms Carswell commented.

As well as the National Museum of Culture and History and the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, the city is home to the Cathedral of the Holy Ghost, which dates back to 1642.
