About Mega Maldives:

Founded in 2010, Mega Maldives was an airline based in the Maldives that offered scheduled passenger and charter services. At the time it ceased operations, the airline flew to 13 different destinations across South East Asia, the Far East and the Middle East.

Mega Maldives gained its air operator's certificate at the end of 2010 and flew its inaugural flight with service from its hub airport at Velana International Airport, Malé to its secondary hub Gan International Airport, Addu Atoll.

Mega Maldives flew its first international flight in January 2011 with a service between Hong Kong International Airport and Gan International Airport, which continued to be one of the airline's most popular routes in the years to come.

Financial difficulties became present to the public eye in 2016 when the airline cut 65 staff and postponed the launch of new routes. In May 2017, Mega Maldives suspended all operations and later announced that the airline had permanently shut down.

Hub Airport

Malé International Airport

Malé International Airport or Velana International Airport is the main airport in the Maldives and was the hub airport for Mega Maldives. The airline is situated on Hulhulé Island and acts as a major gateway into the Maldives from many areas of the world.

The airport opened as Hulhulé Airport in 1960 and the inaugural flight at the airport was flown by Air Ceylon in 1962. As tourism continued to grow in the Maldives, it was decided that the airport needed to be upgraded in order to take in the new influx of international traffic to the Maldives. It undertook a major revamp and was renamed Malé International Airport.

Malé International Airport is currently the hub for Maldivian and Trans Maldivian Airways.

Fleet

At the time that it ceased operations, Mega Maldives had a fleet containing entirely Boeing aircraft. In total, Mega Maldives operated three aircraft — one Boeing 757-200 and two Boeing 767-300.
