Low Cost Airlines Welcome to the section of Alternative Airlines which deals exclusively with those airlines which style themselves as Low Cost or Low Fare airlines. There are as many different types of low cost carriers as there are low cost carriers ! LOW COST DEFINITION Each airline has its own individual mix of components that are included in the basic fare and those which cost extra. To make the distinction between a low cost or low fare airline and a full service or legacy carrier, Alternative Airlines has decided that, in general, those airlines that offer paper tickets or e-tickets can be classified as full service or legacy airlines. Those that offer only a booking locator or booking reference can be classified as low cost or low fare airlines. LOW COST CONNECTIONS Most low cost airlines only offer point to point services on their own flights. In reality this means that you purchase single sector journeys. The airline is only responsible for delivering you to the airport shown as the destnation on that particular sector. Be clear, if you are looking to use low cost carriers to perform multi sector journeys, you are taking the risk of missed connections. On a multi sector journey, if you want to have the re-assurance of knowing that the airline will look after in the event of a delay, use legacy carriers and make sure that all of the connections are booked in a single transaction. LOW COST EXTRAS Despite the pitfalls, Alternative Airlines is a great supporter of low cost airlines for short haul flying anywhere in the world; for simple journeys at great fares. Check the list of low cost airlines which can be booked through our site and remember that the availablity display on the page shows not only low cost airlines but also compares their prices to those offered by full service airlines on the same route. Alternative Airlines is dedicated to giving you the greatest choice of airline on any given route. Low cost airlines are labelled as "Lowcost" within the availability display. When comparing prices with full service airlines, you'll need to add on something extra if you're the type of traveller who likes to munch his way through a flight, can't go for over an hour without a coffee, or doesn't want to sprint across the tarmac to bag a window seat. |
