Latin American Alliances changing partners for 2012 ?

There are three global airline alliances: OneWorld. Star and SkyTeam.

Going into 2012 each has its captive Latin American partners, OneWorld has LAN; Star has TAM and SkyTeam has AeroMexico.
Already announced for 2012 is that Avianca TACA and COPA will join STAR and that Aerolineas Argentinas will join Skyteam .
However the imminent LAN TAM merger may change things considerably as it makes sense for the two newly merged airlines to be members of the same alliance.
LAN is very important for the BA/Iberia dominated OneWorld alliance, so it is probable that TAM will switch to One World.
Avianca is busy integrating Avianca Brazil (Ocean Air as was) into the Avianca group and could be expected to be the Brazilian replacement for TAM in Star.
Brazilian giant GOL has a significant shareholder in SkyTeam founder Delta airlines so it could be that they will be pulled into Skyteam.

These are merely predictions, but in 2012 passengers travelling to Latin America who wish to take advantage of the benefits of flying on multiple flights with carriers within a single alliance, will need to check carefully which airline is where !

y predictions, but if they come true international passengers destined for destinations in Latin America will have to become more conscious of which airlines belong to which alliance isf they wish to take advantage oftehbenfits
