Leading Latin American based and US feeder airlines, COPA AIRLINES, COLOMBIA COPA AIRLINES, UNITED AIRLINES, CONTINENTAL AIRLINES AND AVIANCA TACA have announced the intention to establish cooperation agreements leading to mutual codeshare agreements, programme co-ordination and shared frequent flyer arrangements.

In 2010 Avianca/TACA and COPA airlines both announced separately that they were to join the STAR alliance despite appearing to be fierce competitors as some Latin American routes. Now, possibly as a response to the growing influence in the region of the combined LAN (of Chile) and TAM (of Brazil) alliance even closer co-operation has been announced. The LATAM merged carrier is part of OneWorld whilst the new co-oalition of AviancaTACA plus Copa fits neatly into the Star Alliance with North American feed from the combined United/ Continental network.
This means that" customers of Copa, Copa Airlines Colombia, United Airlines, Continental Airlines and AviancaTaca may purchase tickets for the routes included in the agreement from all sales systems, offices, call centers and travel agencies. A single ticket will be enough to get around various routes of the airline, allowing less connection time, elimination of multiple processes of check-in and optimization of baggage handling."
We have already blogged our belief that 2011 will be the year that Alliances really begin to make a difference to a passenger's travel planning, this will now be even more true for those of us intending to travel to and within Latin America...
