LAN airlines of Chile is planning to reduce by 50% the number of its flights it will operate to Easter Island between 05th March and April 09th 2011 due to major airport runway reconstruction works.
The frequency of Boeing 767 flights between LAN's base in Santiago and the Easter Island Airport, Materveri will reduce from the usual 14 per week to 6 per week during the resurfacing of the airport runways. Annually 50,000 tourists travel to Easter Island which is the most remote airport in the world.
During August 2010, LAN signed an agreement with Brazilian airline TAM Airlines to merge the tow companies to form the LATAM Airlines Group. LAN is also part of the prestigious One World alliance with British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, S7 (of Russia), Air Berlin, Royal Jordanian, Malev and Qantas
