Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Rosie Murray-West pointed out that if individuals plan to go away several times in one year, it can be cheaper to take out an annual policy.
However, she explained some providers are wary of offering these to older travellers as they consider them to be more likely to make a claim.
Another top tip offered by the author is to shop around, as "the cost of cover for older people varies wildly", while quotes can vary depending on the destination the holidaymakers are heading to.
Ms Murray-West also recommended looking into paid-for bank accounts as these sometimes offer year-long travel insurance as part of the package.
"These seem expensive when you are younger, but for older people, whose insurance is otherwise more expensive, this perk may be worth bearing in mind," she stated.
This could be sound advice for many people, as marketing co-ordinator at Gapforce Adam Pembry recently claimed an increasing number of older individuals are choosing to go on gap years.
