Travellers looking for an alternative holiday getaway may want to book a flight with Avianca to Colombia and take part in a house swap.
Research carried out by Lloyds TSB Insurance has revealed that an increasing number of people are trading homes with strangers in order to have a cheaper vacation.
In 2011, twice as many individuals are set to exchange properties than in the previous 12 months, with 1.6 million saying they have planned to do so.
Paul Spillane, head of home claims at Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "House swapping looks set to be the trend of the year - it's easy to see why as this type of holiday caters for so many different tastes.
" While many are intending to venture to properties within the UK, ten per cent are travelling further afield to countries such as America.
The Hollywood film The Holiday starred Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two single women who exchanged homes in Britain and America.
