Green Airlines

Planet or Profit?

The most important challenge facing all airlines in the early part of the 21st Century is reacting meaningfully to the increasing challenge of climate change. Passengers will need to be able to assess which airlines are doing the most to bring down their carbon emissions and which continue to put "Profit before Planet". With an increasing choice of airlines on most major and many minor air routes, coupled with the internet's ability to make price and scheduling comparisons easier, the air ticket buyer will also need to inform their purchase decision with facts about an airline's green credentials.

"Fair-trade" labelling in commodities is encouraging consumers to buy products which are ethically sourced, we believe that an type of equivalent consumer pressure can be brought to bear on airlines by making public their policies, attitudes and actions with regard to lowering carbon emissions. This section of the Alternative Airlines web site is dedicated to drawing together stories about how much or how little different airlines are meeting this challenge. Each story ends with a "Green Airline" judgement on whether the airline's motivation springs from "Planet or Profit".
