Gap years 'will still be popular despite tuition fee increases'

Increases to tuition fees are not likely to have a significant effect on the number of people taking gap years, an expert has claimed.

Flights to LuandaTravellers considering booking long-term breaks abroad with TAAG Angola and other airlines may temporarily rethink their plans, but this is not likely to last too long, according to James Chapman, director of Outreach International.

He explained that last time there was a rise in the amount paid for a university education by students, a small decrease in the number of people taking gap years was seen.

However, he asserted that once "this bridge was crossed", the situation "returned to normal".

"When we saw the last increase in tuition fees for about six months people were very careful about applying for these sort of things," he asserted.

Despite this he noted that there is a declining number of young people taking gap years, but that more Britons are taking career breaks to travel.

In April, Mr Chapman asserted that young people see this form of travel as a way to "broaden their horizons".
