However, he stressed that urbanites with a love of culture will also relish a trip to the South American nation.

"Essentially it is a country for anyone who likes adventure, music, dance, celebrations, and gastronomy," Mr Lomanto stated.

He added that Sao Paulo was one of the most popular destinations for tourists last year, along with Rio de Janeiro and the State of Bahia.

This comes after Lonely Planet author Kevin Raub asserted that Rio de Janeiro has become "synonymous" with sand and sun.
