Copa Airlines, The national carrier of Panama and fast growing Latin American airline, is evaluating whether to join the important STAR Alliance.
COPA remain close to its previous investment partner Continental Airlines which this year left the SkyTeam Alliance and signed up immediately with STAR. COPA followed suit in leaving SkyTeam but have yet to sign up with STAR. Continental remain an important interline partner for COPA and its daughter company, Aerorepublica of Colombia, so it is unlikely that COPA will consider joining OneWorld. It is possible that COPA will continue to make interline agreements with individual carriers and remain independent, but in the light of the recent merger of competitors, TACA of EL Salvador and Avianca of Colombia, COPA need to continue to secure the strategic position of their main hubs in Panama City.
