CARIBBEAN Airlines, based in Trinidad and Tobago, is negotiating to over Air Jamaica's most profitable routes but will not take responsibility for the Jamaican carriers debts.

Air Jamaica is expected to make many employees redundant on April 12th 2010 whilst Caribbean Airlines is looking at the acquisition of the major inbound tourist routes operated by Air Jamaica following a four week transition period. The Jamaican Government has signed a letter of intent stating that Caribbean Airlines will commence its Jamaican operations on or before July 1 2010 upon the cessation of operations of Air Jamaica. It has been speculated in the local media that most of Air Jamaica's work force will be laid off following the Caribbean takeover, Air Jamaica has suggested that the transition to Caribbean Airlines will be phased over a period of up to one year during which Air Jamaica aircraft and flight crew will continue to be used.
