Caribbean Airlines moves on from Air Jamaica merger to takeover of LIAT

State-owned Trinidad and Tobago carrier, Caribbean Airlines, is seeking to mount a take over bit for the smaller regional airline LIAT. Recently Caribbean Airlines acquired a majority stake in long established carrier, Air Jamaica and started operating Air Jamaica’s most profitable routes from May 1, 2010. Currently there are five airlines in the Caribbean, Caribbean Airlines, Air Jamaica, LIAT, Cayman Airways and Bahamas Air and the Trinidad and Tobago government see these consolidating down to one single Caribbean airline. The shareholder governments in LIAT with whom Caribbean Airlines will be negotiating are Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Antigua and Barbuda.
