Avianca the National Carrier of Colombia and the largest domestic airline is to get new competition from a start-up low cast carrier called VivaColombia and backed by the Ryan family who are behind European giant, Ryanair.
VivaColombia will launch as Colombia's first low-cost airline and will be based in the regional city of Medellin. the shareholders of VivaColombia already hold a large stake in VivaAerobus of Mexico.
Initailly the low cost carrier will only fly domestically but has announced long terms plans to also operate flights to international cities.
