Air Zimbabwe has survived many years of turmoil and financial pressure but is currently facing its greatest challenge in the shape of a major court battle with its own workers over proposed involuntary layoffs as part of a cost saving exercise.
Part of the court proceedings have highlighted the perilious plight of the airlines’ finances and unusually this has disclosure has been made by the airlines’own solicitors seeking to enhance their case for the enforcement of the involuntary lay-offs. Documents presented to the court show that Air Zimbabwe has a weak balance sheet with creditors in excess of US$28 million and is being subsidised by teh Zimababwe Governement at the rate of around $3.00 Million per week. (Note from ed: After flying continually and sucessfully for 42 years, it would be a tragedy if this once great airline disappeared.. let’s hope the dispute can be solved, the Government continue to put in the cash required to buy fuel etc and that Air Zim emerge soon into a brighter future. )| < Prev | Next > |
