After 37 years of operation, Air Niugini remains as committed as ever to the future development of air services for the travelling public in Papua New Guinea, the region and elsewhere in the world where it operates to. Wasantha Kumarasiri, wo has been Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini since 2006, is fully backed by seven general managers and seven senior managers. Under the new board chaired by Sir James Tjoeng and the leadership of Kumarasiri and his management team, Air Niugini has recently been successful in laying firm foundations for the future. Air Niugini’s aircraft fleet has increased from 11 aircraft in 2006 to 20 aircraft by the end of 2010. The latest acquisitions have included a Boeing 767, the second of this type for the airline, and a brand new Dash 8-Q400 Next Generation aircraft which arrived in July. The second Q400 arrives at the end of September and will bring the total aircraft in the airline fleet to 20 .The additional aircraft gives Air Niugini the opportunity to capitalise on the prospects and developments arising from the multi-billion dollar Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project. The LNG project is by far the biggest mining project ever undertaken in Papua New Guinea with the labour force to be drawn from throughout the world. Kumarasiri said: “There will be increased movements of people and cargo during the various stages of the project and with an additional aircraft on the international sector, Air Niugini will be in a better position to handle these movements.”
